My apologies to all my Live Journal friends for my long absence. Since signing on to Facebook, where I'm participating in a bunch of classical groups and pages, I seem to have totally abandoned my duties here. And Denise guessed it, one can only have a secret boyfriend so long before one tires of it, at least that's true of me. Valery Gergiev is still my very favorite conductor, but I've allowed others to spread the news about him because, for one, they do it much better! and probably have a bit more fun doing it. I'm still studying Russian and still long to visit St. Petersburg and Moscow, I will someday I know it!!!
I will delete this LJ at some point but I'll leave it open for now in case anyone wants to contact me.

The Mariinski has a You Tube Channel. With performances, press conferences and lots of talking by Gergiev about it all.
There is an LSO Channel too. Go to YouTube, type "Mariinsky" or LSO in the searchbox, and search away.

Yes, Valery Gergiev is conquering the Great White North. After winning the Gold in the Conducting an Orchestra from a Very Remote Location event at the Olympics (he was in Vancouver, the orchestra was in St. Petersburg), he is taking the Mariinsky band on a tour including Ottowa and Montreal. And they love him.
He's also been uncharacteristically loquacious. Here are two very good interviews, one in which he actually visits the possibility of....gasp!.....delegating responsibiity at the Mariinsky.....

After a Russian show inToronto ( Rachmaninoff, Liadov) on St. Patrick's day, it's off to California for shows in San Diego, San Francisco, & Orange County with a similar menu (Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Shostakovich).

Found this paragraph of Tim Smith's review of the "do" at the Russian Embassy on 3/1 amusing:
"I would have thought Gergiev could then make an escape and get some rest, but he stayed to mingle with the guests at a nosh. (I'm not sure everyone appreciated that. While I was talking to Gergiev near one of the buffet tables, the conductor was nudged out of the way by a man hurriedly scavenging for food. Gergiev took it in stride, even said 'Oh, I'm sorry,' and moved aside. I would have clobbered the guy.)"
Here's the rest of the article. Did anyone know beforehand Valery Abisalovich was going to conduct at the Olympics???? I am just learning about that now. :-(

Medici TV in France streams a lot of Mariinsky videos. It's a pay per view site, but in the case of many performances, you can see a bit of the show before you have to pay.
In this vid of Gergiev conducting the Mariinsky in a characteristically fabulous performance of Tchaikovsky's Sixth from January 29 at Salle Playel, you do get much of the First Movement....as well as a great look at the Maestro's own emotional performance!
